Woman commit suicide for losing N7,000

A 22-year-old petty trader has committed suicide after losing the N7,000 she realised from her trade.

Kaivi Kayode, the Togolese woman, was said to have gulped a bottle of insecticide known as Sniper at her 4, Jaz Street home, Aiyetoro in Ijanikin, a Lagos suburb, on Sunday.

Kaivi, it was gathered, had lamented the loss of the money she made on Saturday around 12pm, only for her body to be found inside the room where she locked herself up.

It was learnt that the deceased’s 15-year-old sister, Favour, was the first person to see her body and she raised the alarm.

A  source said the deceased was bitter over the loss of the money because she was in debt and intended to pay off so that she could get new stock.

"It was her younger sister who shouted. She later went to the police station to report.

"I heard that the woman killed herself because the N7,000 she made from hawking on Saturday was stolen.

*She went inside and locked the door. When her younger sister did not see her after about one hour, she went to check on her. She discovered that the door was locked from inside.

“She knocked, but her sister did not answer. So she forced the door open and saw Kaivi on the ground lifeless. An empty bottle of Sniper was beside her. She screamed and people came to the scene,” the source further said.

Villagers bury man alive for beheading elder brother

A man from Liokom village in the Wanihem community, Yala Local Government Area of Cross River State, was on Wednesday, May 29, allegedly buried alive by angry villagers for beheading his elder brother.

The man was said to have been buried in the same grave with his slain brother. It was gathered that the incident happened few weeks after the demise of their mother.

An eyewitness, who lives in the community, said the two brothers, identified simply as Ojemba and Obok, had no quarrel before the incident.

The eyewitness said, “Ojemba was the younger one. Obok came back from a wake service yesterday (Wednesday) morning and his wife gave him some food to eat before going to the farm to stake his yams.

“But while eating, Ojemba took the machete, which Obok had sharpened to cut yam stakes, and dealt three cuts on his brother from the behind and severed his head.”

The source explained that Obok’s wife raised the alarm and the villagers gathered and tried to arrest Ojemba.

It was learnt that Ojemba escaped to his room, where he threatened to behead anyone who came close to him.

“He went inside his room, daring anyone to come close. But three young men defied the threat, went to his room and dragged him out,” the eyewitness added.

The source said the villagers had some discussions and concluded that the incident was an abomination and insisted that Ojemba too must die with his brother.

The source added, “They tied his arms and legs and dumped him inside the grave they dug for his brother and placed his brother’s body on him and covered the grave with earth.

“He was begging and shouting that they should have mercy on him, but nobody listened. This happened a few weeks after their mother died.”

North Korea executes 5 officials over failed Kim-Trump summit

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un reportedly ordered the execution of several top officials in March after they were unable to reach an agreement with President Trump at a second summit between the two leaders earlier this year.

Bloomberg News reported Thursday citing a South Korean newspaper that Kim Hyok Chol, North Korea's special envoy to the U.S., was executed in March along with four other North Korean foreign ministry officials involved in the February summit in Hanoi, Vietnam.

A fifth official, Kim Jong Un’s top deputy, Kim Yong Chol, has reportedly been sentenced to hard labor.

Kim Yong Chol has been North Korea’s top nuclear negotiator and the counterpart of U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo since Kim entered nuclear talks with the U.S. early last year.

An unnamed North Korean source told the Chosun Ilbo newspaper that Kim Yong Chol and four other officials were executed at a North Korean airport for allegedly spying on behalf of the U.S.

“Kim Hyok Chol was investigated and executed at Mirim Airport with four foreign ministry officials in March,” the source said.

R. Kelly charged with 11 new counts of sexual assault

Singer R. Kelly is facing new sexual assault charges, including some that carry a potential sentence of up to 30 years in prison.

Kelly, 52, is facing 11 additional felony counts, with new charges filed Thursday in Cook County, Ill., according to multiple local reports.

The "Ignition" singer is facing four counts of aggravated criminal sexual assault, as well as multiple other counts of sexual abuse and assault, the Chicago Sun-Times reported.

The R&B star pleaded not guilty in February to 10 counts of aggravated sexual abuse in a case involving four victims.

Three of the alleged victims were under the age of 17 at the time of the alleged incidents, which prosecutors say spanned 1998 to 2010.

The charges came after the documentary "Surviving R. Kelly" aired on Lifetime earlier this year, which detailed a series of sexual abuse allegations against the performer.

"I didn't do this stuff," Kelly told Gayle King in a "CBS This Morning" interview in March. "This is not me! I'm fighting for my f---ing life!"

Kelly's attorney, Steve Greenberg, told the Chicago Sun-Times on Thursday that he had been informed by prosecutors of new charges but hadn't yet seen the court filings.

"We'll see what the charges are, and we'll proceed accordingly," Greenberg said. "I know this much: it's old. They're allegations from years ago."

Man who set himself on fire outside the White House dies in the hospital

The man who set himself on fire outside the White House on Wednesday has died, police have said.

According to police sources, the man was hallucinating at the time of the incident after taking the drug K2 that had been laced with PCP.

Arnav Gupta, 33, was identified by US Park Police on Thursday after dying in the hospital.

He had been reported missing by his family around the time that he was seen setting himself on fire on a lawn at Ellipse Park near the White House.

Gupta was from Bethesda, Maryland. His motive for the deadly stunt remains unclear.

On Thursday, TMZ cited unnamed police sources who said he was hallucinating on K2 - a form of synthetic marijuana - and that he had also taken Phencyclidine.

Phencyclidine is commonly known as PCP or angel dust. It is known to cause hallucinations.

Gupta had been reported missing by his family after leaving his home at 9.20am. Three hours later, he was filmed setting himself on fire.

World's smallest baby released from San Diego hospital

The smallest surviving baby in the world left the hospital five months after she came into the world at a San Diego, California hospital.

Baby Saybie was born at 23 weeks and three days last December, weighing in at just 8.6 ounces about the weight of a large apple -- making her the smallest surviving baby in the world, according to officials at Sharp Mary Birch Hospital.

She was released from the hospital earlier this month weighing 5.6 pounds.

"After experiencing severe pregnancy complications, Saybie's mother gave birth via emergency cesarean section at 23 weeks, 3 days gestation in the womb," the hospital explained at a news conference.

Doctors said the preterm birth was necessary after they found that the baby was not gaining weight and her mother's life was at immediate risk.

Saybie was deemed the world's smallest surviving newborn by the Tiniest Babies Registry that is maintained by the University of Iowa

According to the hospital, she weighed 7 grams less than the previous smallest baby, who was born in Germany in 2015.

President Donald Trump claims 'harassment' after Mueller statement

US President Donald Trump wrote on Thursday that he had been subjected to "the greatest presidential harassment in history," before asserting that the investigation, which he called a "witch hunt," has cost $40 million.

The tweet came in response to special counsel Robert Mueller's statement the day before. Mueller spoke, possibly for the only time, on his 488-page report into interference in the 2016 presidential election and explained why his office neither charged nor exonerated the president.

In his statement, Mueller did not comment on whether he thought the president had obstructed justice, but he made clear that "charging the president with a crime was not an option we could consider."

He went on to explain that this stance is based on longstanding DOJ policy that his investigation was obligated to respect as it was conducted under the department's umbrella.

Where the president got the $40 million number was also unclear, as financial statements submitted by Mueller's team show they spent only $17 million, with the highest estimate being $32 million once contributions by the Department of Justice (DOJ) were counted.

However, this number is also controversial considering the probe uncovered at least $42 million in tax evasion on the part of Trump's former campaign chairman Paul Manafort.

Last week, Trump had said that the investigation cost $20 million.

After 22 months, Mueller's investigation ended with charges filed against three companies and 34 people, including six Trump associates.

Evidence the special counsel gathered is also being used in 14 federal and state court cases. From DW.
