COVID-19: Kesington Adebutu donates N300m to Lagos

Popular philanthropist and businessman, Sir Kesington Adebutu, has donated the sum of N300 million to the Lagos State government towards combating the coronavirus in the state.

The state currently has the highest number of coronavirus cases in the country with 68 and the state government has put in place measures to fight the disease.

In a letter addressds to the state governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, dated March 30, Sir Kesington, popularly known as Baba Ijebu, described the donation as his own way helping the state in bringing succour to those who are down with the disease.

According to the letter written by the businessman, “On behalf of myself, my entire family and organisation, we commend the dynamic efforts of Your Excellency in bringing succour to the sufferers of COVID-19 in the state.

"As a token of our support to the victims, myself, family and organisation are donating a modest sum of N300,000,000.00 (Three Hundred Million Naira Only) towards which we have forwarded the necessary instruction and our Banker–Wema Bank Plc has transferred the sum into the dedicated UBAAccount number 1022751273 of LASG COVID-19.

#Coronavirus: Buhari’s lockdown order is legal, says Osinbajo

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo stated that President Buhari's lockdown order in Lagos, Ogun and the FCT is legal.

The Vice President who disclosed this while speaking at a Google Hangout, a programme organised by HACK COVID-19 Call Centre in Abuja on Monday March 30, stated that the legality of the president’s order is unnecessary because it is backed by an act of the national assembly.

In a statement issued by Osinbajo's media aide Laolu Akande, the Vice President stated that the Quarantine Act of 1926 which is published in all Nigerian laws allows the President to designate any local area, any part of the country, as a place that may be infected or under the threat of a communicable disease, and he can then make regulations of any kind.

He said;

"Regarding the legality of the shutdowns announced by the President yesterday, -Sunday-I think it is entirely legal. These steps are proactive, very relevant, important and backed by law.

“I am not so sure some of the people who have commented on the issue have come across the Quarantine Act. There is a Quarantine Act of 1926, it’s been published in all of the Laws of Nigeria, every edition of the Laws of Nigeria, it is there.

“What the Act does is that it allows the President to designate any local area, any part of the country, as a place that may be infected or under the threat of a communicable disease, and he can then make regulations of any kind.

“For instance, he can say, people should not go out; no public gatherings etc. So, it is a regulation that gives the President powers and these powers come from the National Assembly because, of course, it is an act of the National Assembly.

“So, the President has extensive powers under the Quarantine Act of 1926. Also, Governors have extensive powers under the same Quarantine Act. It is barely a one page legislation, so it is not particularly difficult to find the relevant provisions and it is not particularly difficult to read, very straightforward. So, the President has all the powers.

"Many of us are not familiar with the Influenza pandemic that killed several millions around the world in 1918. At that time regulations were made here, very similar to what we have today, although that was under the colonial authorities.

“They also banned public gatherings, banned gatherings in places of worship then. So, there is even good historical precedence for some of what we are doing today.”

However, the total lockdown of the state will be effective from 11:00 p.m. on Friday, April 3, 2020. Plane catches fire at Manila airport, killing all 8 aboard (photos)

A plane carrying eight people, including an American and a Canadian, burst into flames Sunday while attempting to take off from Manila’s airport on a flight bound for Japan, killing all those on board, officials said.

The Westwind 24 plane, which was carrying six Filipino crew members and the American and Canadian passengers, was bound for Tokyo on a medical mission when it caught fire near the end of the main runway, Manila airport general manager Ed Monreal said.

Firetrucks and rescue personnel rushed and doused the twin-engine aircraft with foam to try to extinguish the flames, he said. "Unfortunately, there were no survivors," Monreal told a late-night news conference.

He declined to identify the victims until their families were informed and said other details about the flight and the passengers were unclear.

The Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines said the aircraft apparently encountered an unspecified “problem which resulted in a fire” as it rolled to take off, adding its chief investigator was on the way to the scene.

Video footage shows the aircraft engulfed in bright-orange flames in the darkness as firefighters scramble to put out the fire by spraying chemical foam while sirens blare.

What is most important for you right now is to connect to your own inner light. This will create the biggest opening of all. Trust that you have all of the power within to make this happen, and in order to do that connect to the people and things that bring you a lot of joy. When the mind starts to move into overthinking or fear, shift your attention right away to something bright. It doesn’t matter what has happened in the past or what is happening around us now, you can always make the choice to break free of the wheel of suffering and panic and open up to your own light. We are powerful manifestors , so once you make the choice in the moment to shift your awareness to something good, it will show you in your reality. Be conscious, especially right now of fears coming in from others, and recognize that not everything should be held by you. Laughter is your best medicine, but tears can also be a powerful release. Let go of any judgment you may have around that. Remember that you are never alone, and if you need to be reminded of that ask for support and it will show up. Everything comes down to intention, and even though there are conflicting energies circling around us you must KNOW...It will rebuild. But in order for that to happen, you have to do exactly that. Trust. You have the biggest heart and that is your greatest gift. It’s impossible to always control your surroundings, but when you shift the focus to how you want to feel, everything will conspire to assist you. I love and miss my beautiful family and friends and I can’t wait for the joyful day when we are all able to reunite. Until then please keep your lights on. 🤍

German state finance minister Thomas Schaefer commits suicide over coronavirus despair

Thomas Schaefer, the finance minister of Germany's Hesse state, has committed suicide apparently after becoming "deeply worried" over how to cope with the economic fallout from the coronavirus, state premier Volker Bouffier said on Sunday.

Thomas Schaefer, who was the finance minister of Germany’s Hesse region, was found dead by suicide Saturday on railway tracks at Hochheim, which is near Frankfurt.

"We are in shock, we are in disbelief and above all we are immensely sad," Bouffier said in a recorded statement.

Police and prosecutors said factors, including the questioning of witnesses and their own observations at the scene, led them to conclude that Schaefer killed himself.

Visibly shaken Bouffier recalled that Schaefer, who was Hesse's finance chief for 10 years, had been working "day and night" to help companies and workers deal with the economic impact of the pandemic.

"Today we have to assume that he was deeply worried," said Bouffier, a close ally of Chancellor Angela Merkel.

"It's precisely during this difficult time that we would have needed someone like him," he added.

He leaves behind a wife and two children.

Singapore court upholds law criminalizing sex between men

The Supreme Court of Singapore has upheld a law that criminalizes sex between men, dismissing three separate appeals claiming that the legislation was unconstitutional.

According to Reuters, two lawyers involved in the hearings reported the ruling on Monday.

The decision comes after a series of challenges last year to Singapore's controversial gay sex law, which has its roots in the country's British colonial era.

According to their lawyers, the applicants had argued that Section 377A, a rarely implemented law, under which a man found to have committed an act of "gross indecency" with another man could be imprisoned for up to two years, is unconstitutional.

Singapore broadcaster CNA reported that the verdict was announced in the court four months after cases were made by the lawyers for the three men: Johnson Ong Ming, a disc jockey, Roy Tan Seng Kee, a retired general practitioner and Bryan Choong Chee Hoong, the former executive director of LGBT+ non-profit organization Oogachaga.

Tan's lawyer, only known by the name Ravi, told local media that the decision was "astounding" and "utterly shocking."

He argued that the "absurd and arbitrary application" of the law is a violation of the Constitution as all gay and bisexual men are forced to report their consensual private sexual acts to the police.

According to Ravi, the law breaches the right to equality and personal liberty. The lawyer said he is collaborating with a team to assess the prospects of appeal.
