Amir Khan’s wife Faryal Makhdoom believes stay-at-home parents should be paid more than a surgeon

Faryal Makhdoom believes stay-at-home mums should be paid by the government for looking after their children and running the household.

The 27-year-old, who is married to boxer Amir Khan, appeared on Good Morning Britain alongside former Sugababe star Amelle Berrabah, to debate whether stay-at-home parents should be paid a wage.

Appearing on the show opposite hosts Ben Shephard and Kate Garraway, Faryal explained how she believes they should be paid – arguing her workload equates to £100,000 a year salary.

Speaking on the show, Faryal said: ‘Us staying home, we’re working like 90 hours a week.

'We’re not just looking after our children but the entire house. A CEO of the house that’s not getting paid.

‘It’s laundry, cooking, cleaning, looking after your children, and I think when you put it all together, we should get paid more than a surgeon or a lawyer, it adds up to £100k a year, more than that.’

Asked if she should take up the issue with her husband, Faryal said: ‘But see I’m lucky enough to get help and get a cleaner and get a cook.

'But what about some of my friends who can’t afford it, they have to leave work to look after their children because childcare is more expensive and their husband’s don’t have that extra money to give their wives.

‘I feel like we’re helping the economy by staying home and doing all the work we would be getting from the government.’

Amelle, who has a one-year-old daughter, argued against Faryal's claims by stating that bringing up children shouldn't be a paid job.

'I just don’t agree with it. I think if you choose to have children you should bring your children up with love. Obviously you love your children, but I just can’t see it as a job.

'If we break up everything in this life we have into money and employee, it takes away the personal love you have for your child. That’s the only thing I can’t see from your perspective.

‘I think if you and your partner have a child, you should enjoy bringing them up.’
