Boxer Patrick Day undergoes emergency brain surgery after suffering brutal knockout

Junior middleweight fighter Patrick Day was taken to intensive care and given emergency brain surgery after suffering a knockout at the hands of Charles Conwell.

The bout took place on the undercard of Oleksandr Usyk’s heavyweight debut against Chazz Witherspoon in Chicago, with highly-rated prospect Conwell brutally knocking out Day in the 10th round with a left hook.

Conwell had knocked Day down twice previously in the fight before delivering the knockout blow and, when Day was felled for a third time, his head bounced off the canvas.

Day remained down for several minutes after the punch as he received medical attention and the 27-year-old was later rushed to Northwestern Memorial Hospital.

The fighter was said to be conscious throughout the ambulance journey but lost consciousness when he made it to the hospital, according to ESPN.

The fight’s broadcasters DAZN said that Day suffered a seizure before being placed in a medically induced coma.

'I had a chance to speak to the doctor, he told us Patrick never woke up on his way to the ambulance,' DAZN's Claudia Trejos said.

'He started seizing on his way to the ambulance, and he has been taken to hospital. Our thoughts and prayers are with Patrick Day and his family.'
