7 dead and 21 missing after tour boat sinks in Hungary

Hungarian rescue crews on Thursday searched for survivors after a tourist boat collided with another vessel in central Budapest and sank in the Danube River.

At least seven people were confirmed dead and 21 others were missing, rescue officials said.

The boat, named Hableany (Mermaid) and operated by a South Korean tour agency, was returning from an hour-long night tour when the accident occurred.

Two crew members and 33 passengers were on board, most of which were from South Korea.

Authorities said the Hableany was traveling close to a Viking cruise ship as they approached the Margit Bridge, not far from Budapest's iconic neo-Gothic parliament building on the riverbank.

The two ships were sailing side by side and in the same direction. But the tour boat veered into the much larger Viking and the two collided. This caused the Hableany to tip to its side, sending several passengers into the water, and then quickly sank.

"As the Viking comes into contact with (the Hableany), it overturns it and in about seven seconds, as it turns on its side, it sinks," Police Col. Adrian Pal said.

It remains unclear why the tour boat veered into the cruise ship. Police say they have launched a criminal investigation into the incident, one of the country's worst boat accidents.

" I won’t victimise workers" - Governor-elect Bello Matawalle

Bello Matawalle, the newly elected Governor of Zamfara today, urged the state’s workers to go about their duties without fear of victimisation.

Matawalle gave the assurance during his first official engagement at Government House, Gusau when he addressed Permanent Secretaries, Heads of Government Agencies and Departments led by the state Head of Service, Alhaji Mujitaba Isa.

"The civil service is no doubt the engine room that facilitates the growth and development for the success of government programmes and policies.

"The service should reorient itself and be more disciplined in the discharge of its responsibilities starting from reporting to work from 8 a.m. and closing by 3.30 p.m. as stipulated in the rules.

“I am not here to fight with anybody, but I want you to be apolitical and focused in your assigned responsibilities,” he said.

In his response, Isa assured the governor of workers full support and cooperation.

Matawalle while taking oath of office on Wednesday promised to meet and discuss with stakeholders on how best to chart a new course for the state.

He also met behind closed doors with the state’s Council of Chiefs which is chaired by the Emir of Anka, Alhaji Muhammad Ahmad.

EFCC arraigns woman and 5 others who claimed snake swallowed N35m JAMB money

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Friday arraign a controversial official of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Philomina Chieshe and 5 others before Justice Peter Afen of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court in Abuja, following her alleged involvement in the N35million fraud.

Apart from Philomena, the other five officials of JAMB in the matter are Samuel Umoru, Yakubu Jekada, Daniel Agbo, Priscilla Ogunsola, and Aliyu Yakubu. Philomena, who is a JAMB official in Benue State, became popular when she made an outlandish claim that a mysterious snake swallowed about N35million cash arising from sale of e-JAMB cards in the state.

The controversial JAMB official is being prosecuted by the EFCC on an eight-count charge, following her refusal to furnish the management of JAMB the true information on the financial status of JAMB e-cards supplied to the Benue Zonal office between 2014 and 2016.

Instead of Philomena rendering account on the said N35million, being the shortfall of un-remmitted e-JAMB cards in connivance with other officials, she claimed that a mysterious snake swallowed the money.

According to the EFCC, Philomena ought to know that the shortfall in the un-remitted e-JAMB cards, which she claimed disappeared as a result of manipulation from the kingdom of darkness is false and untenable before the law.

The commission added that the action of Philomena is contrary to section 139 (a) of the Penal Code Law.

Meanwhile, the commission has also arraigned another JAMB official, Labaran Tanko, on Tuesday while the defendant pleaded not guilty to the offence.
