Ronaldinho released from Paraguayan prison and placed on house arrest after 32 days in jail

Brazil legend, Ronaldinho and his brother Roberto Assis have been released from prison in Paraguay and placed under house arrest.

The pair were arrested in early March after allegedly using a false passport to enter the country.

After spending 32 days in prison, judge Gustavo Amarilla has decided that the duo can live in a hotel in Asuncion while they await trial on their charges.

Lawyers for Ronaldinho and Assis have posted a $1.6 million (£1.3m) bail on behalf of their clients, after a previous application was denied because authorities deemed the pair to be a flight risk.

Ronaldinho and Assis were detained after producing the documents when entering Paraguay, having traveled to the country to take part in a number of promotional events.

Instead the duo ended up inside the maximum security Agrupacion Especializada prison after being arrested at the Resort Yacht and Golf Club Paraguay. 

"The Attorney General's office issued a warrant for their arrest, charged the player Ronaldinho with using a public document with false content and requested preventative detention," the Ministry of Interior of Paraguay said in a statement. 

Ronaldinho's lawyers have argued that their client had been given the Paraguayan passport as a gift from a local sponsor, and was unaware he was doing anything wrong by using it.

During his time behind bars, the former Barcelona star had been keeping busy by taking part in a number of prison football matches. Several photos and videos of the games have gone viral after being released.

The mother of Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola, Dolors Sala Carrió, has passed away after contracting coronavirus, the club confirmed. Dolors was 82 years old.

A club statement issued on Monday read:
“The Manchester City family are devastated to report the death today of Pep’s mother Dolors Sala Carrió in Manresa, Barcelona after contracting Coronavirus. She was 82-years-old.

“Everyone associated with the club sends their most heartfelt sympathy at this most distressing time to Pep, his family and all their friends.”

Footballer Kyle Walker faces £240,000 fine after sex party with two escorts during coronavirus lockdow

Manchester City are set to fine Kyle Walker around £240,000 after he held a sex party with two escorts at his flat during the coronavirus lockdown.

The 29-year-old and his friend invited the two women escort Louise McNamara, 21, and a 24-year-old Brazilian call girl to his apartment on Tuesday evening, just hours after he told his 1.5 million Twitter followers to strictly observe the lockdown measures in place.

'Please everyone stay home, look after one another through this difficult time and check in on loved ones but don’t visit them,’ he posted.

Louise McNamara, claims she left Walker’s flat at around 2am on Wednesday morning and said she was paid £2,200 in cash.

She told The Sun: ‘I work with an agency in Manchester. I got a message from my boss saying a high-profile client was looking for somebody classy.

'I got a cab from Manchester to the address and a driver picked me up outside and took me to the gates of his apartment.

'On the one hand he’s inviting strangers round to his house for sex, and the next day he’s lecturing everyone on the need to stay safe.

'He’s a hypocrite and putting people at risk.’

According to The Times, Walker now faces a fine from Manchester City which could be up to two weeks’ salary – worth around £240,000.

Walker, who has been capped 48 times by England, issued an apology for his actions.

'I want to take this opportunity to issue a public apology for the choices I made last week,’ Walker said in a statement.

'I understand that my position as a professional footballer brings the responsibility of being a role model. As such, I want to apologise to my family, friends, football club, supporters and the public for letting them down.

‘There are heroes out there making a vital difference to society at the moment, and I have been keen to help support and highlight their amazing sacrifices and life-saving work over the past week.'

Premier League suspends 2019/20 season indefinitely

The Premier League has suspended the 2019/20 season indefinitely amid the coronavirus pandemic and the UK’s lockdown, but remains intent on completing the full campaign.

No Premier League matches have been played since 9 March, and the majority of top-flight teams still have nine games to play to finish their 38-game season.

But with no clear end in sight for the coronavirus pandemic, the League confirmed that it will not return to action in May as had been tentatively scheduled, with no estimation given for when it may return.

The League stressed an intention to complete the season, with clubs in agreement that voiding the entire season was not an acceptable resolution.

Former Marseille president Pape Diouf dies at 68 after contracting coronavirus

Former Marseille president Pape Diouf has died aged 68 after contracting the new coronavirus, his football club announced on Tuesday

Diouf, who was born in Chad but had French and Senegalese citizenship made history by becoming the first black president of a top-tier European football club when he took charge of Marseille in 2005.

He was hospitalised in Senegal after contracting the virus there and had been due to leave for Nice earlier on Tuesday to be treated in France, but a sharp deterioration in his health -- which saw him placed on a respirator -- prevented him from boarding the plane.

 A statement from the French club read: “Olympique de Marseille learned with great sadness of the death of Pape Diouf. Pape will remain forever in the hearts of Marseillais as one of the great craftsmen of the history of the club. Our condolences to his family and loved ones."

Floyd Mayweather’s uncle and former trainer Roger Mayweather dies aged 58

Legendary boxing trainer Roger Mayweather has passed away at the age of 58.

The American, Floyd’s uncle, was heavily involved in Mayweather Jr’s training team following his own boxing career.

Roger was considered the finest trainer of his generation and Floyd attributes his glittering career to his uncle’s lessons in discipline.

The cause of death was unconfirmed but Roger had been in declining health over the last decade and Floyd attributed his deterioration to the after-effects of his boxing career, where he had a record of 59-13, with 35 knockouts.

Floyd Mayweather said in a statement;

"My uncle was one of the most important people in my life inside and outside of the ring.

"Roger was a great champion and one of the best trainers in boxing. Unfortunately, his health was failing him for several years and now he can finally rest in peace.

"Roger meant the world to me, my father Floyd Sr., my uncle Jeff, our whole family, everyone in and around the Mayweather Boxing Gym and the entire boxing world. It is a terrible loss for all of us."

Thee 58-year-old had been a professional boxer until 1999, when he retired as a 37-year-old.

Maria Sharapova announces her retirement from tennis aged 32

Five-time Grand Slam winner Maria Sharapova has announced her retirement from tennis at the age of 32.

The former world No 1, who won Wimbledon in 2004 when she was just 17 years old, has struggled with ongoing problems with her shoulder and has slumped to 373 in the rankings.

She had won only three matches since reaching the fourth round of the 2019 Australian Open and was knocked out in the first round at this year's tournament in Melbourne by Donna Vekic.

In 2016, Sharapova tested positive for the drug meldonium and was banned for two years - later reduced to 15 months on appeal - and returned to action in April 2017.

She was only able to reach one Grand Slam quarter-final and a high of world No 21 after her ban expired.

Sharapova told Vanity Fair on Wednesday: "I'm new to this, so please forgive me. Tennis - I'm saying goodbye.

"How do you leave behind the only life you've ever known? How do you walk away from the courts you've trained on since you were a little girl, the game that you love, one which brought you untold tears and unspeakable joys, a sport where you found a family, along with fans who rallied behind you for more than 28 years?

"I'll miss the training and my daily routine: Waking up at dawn, lacing my left shoe before my right, and closing the court's gate before I hit my first ball of the day. "I'll miss my team, my coaches. I'll miss the moments sitting with my father on the practice court bench. Messi becomes first player to win 500 matches in Spanish football history

Barcelona's striker Lionel Messi has become the first player to record 500 wins in the history of Spanish football.

He achieved the feat against Leganes in the ongoing Copa del Rey tournament as Barcelona defeated the visitors 5-0.

These number of wins (500) is the highest recorded by a single player in Spanish football.

The 32-year-old Messi took 710 games to register this number of wins.

Messi also scored two goals in the match as he netted the ball into the goalpost in the 59th and 89th minute.

Basketball legend Kobe Bryant, 41, and his daughter Gianna, 13, killed in California helicopter crash

Basketball legend Kobe Bryant and his daughter, Gianna, were killed in a helicopter crash in California.

The 41-year-old, who spent his entire 20-year NBA career with the LA Lakers, was one of nine people on board a helicopter when it crashed outside the city of Calabasas, which is situated to the west of Los Angeles, at around 10am on Sunday morning.

His 13-year-old daughter, Gianna, was also on board as the pair were travelling to the Mamba Academy in Thousand Oaks for basketball practice.

According to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, the crash ignited a brush fire and made it difficult for firefighters and emergency personnel to get to the helicopter.

The cause of the crash is now under investigation, while witnesses have reported hearing the helicopter’s engine sputtering while it was still in the air.

"There were no survivors, we have a manifest that indicates there were nine people on the aircraft – the pilot plus eight individuals," said L.A. County Sheriff Alex Villanueva.

Bryant is one of the most successful basketball players of all time having won five NBA championships with LA Lakers, appeared in 18 All-Star games and scoring 33,643 points before retiring in 2016.

Bryant was also named NBA’s Most Valuable Player in 2008 and the MVP in two NBA Finals. He also won two gold medals for the USA at the 2008 and 2012 Olympics. 

Kobe and Gianna are survived by his wife Vanessa and their three other daughters - Natalia, Bianca and Capri, who was born last summer.

Lewis Hamilton donates $500,000 to support victims of Australian bushfires

Formula 1 world champion Lewis Hamilton announced Thursday he was donating $500,000 (€450,000) to help support the victims of the Australian bushfires.

Hamilton posted on Twitter: "It breaks my heart to see the devastation the Australian bushfires are causing to people and animals across the country.

"I'm pledging $500k to support the animals, wildlife volunteers and rural fire services. If you are able to, and you haven't already then you can donate too."

The devastating fires have burned through more than 10.3m hectares of land since September and caused the deaths of 27 people. A study estimates that 1bn animals have now been killed or injured.

French striker Nathael Julan, killed in car accident, aged 23

French striker Nathael Julan has been killed in a car accident at the age of 23.

Julan had been plying his trade with Ligue 2 side Guingamp, although he had a loan spell at Valenciennes last year.

His death was confirmed by his club on Friday afternoon.

Julan, who is believed to have been on his way home from training, was involved in a car accident near the town of Saint-Brieuc with firefighters called to the scene.

Guingamp confirmed the news via a statement, saying: "The club had the immense pain of learning this afternoon of the accidental death of their player Nathael Julan. On this tragic day, all the members of the club join together to send their condolences to Nathael's family."

Julan came through the ranks at Le Havre before joining Guingamp in 2018. He featured regularly in Ligue 1 during his debut campaign before moving to Valenciennes on loan in January.

Cristiano Ronaldo reportedly earns more from being an Instagram influencer than he does from his wages at Juventus.

According to a Hopper HQ study published on Buzz Bingo, Cristiano Ronaldo earned a whopping USD 47.8 million (approximately Rs 340 crores) in a year from sponsored Instagram posts alone.

The Juventus star has earned the amount from 49 sponsored posts. 34-year-old Ronaldo tops the sports category and on an average received USD 975,000 (approximately Rs 6.9 crores) for each advertised post on Instagram.

According to a report by Goal.com, the annual amount that Ronaldo gets from Juventus, for whom he signed in 2018, is USD 34 million.

Some of the brands that Cristiano Ronaldo represented on Instagram include Nike Football, Six Pad Europe, and Clear Haircare.

Nigeria beat Tunisia to claim third place at Africa Cup of Nations

Nigeria beat Tunisia 1-0 in the third-place game at the African Cup of Nations on Wednesday with an early goal by Odion Ighalo, the tournament’s leading scorer. 


Ighalo scored from close range in the third minute when he took advantage of a mix-up in the Tunisian defense at Al Salam Stadium to net his fifth goal in Egypt.

Ighalo was substituted before halftime and left the field holding his left leg, an unexpected end to a tournament where he’s on course to finish as top scorer.

There are three players who could catch him in the final: Algeria pair Riyad Mahrez and Adam Ounas, and Senegal’s Sadio Mane all have three goals.

Pernell “Sweet Pea” Whitaker, the former world champion boxer who embarrassed opponents with his elusive defense and crisp counterpunches, has died at the age of 55.

The Virginian-Pilot reports that the Norfolk, Va., native was fatally struck by a car while crossing the intersection of Northampton Boulevard and Baker Road in Virginia Beach, Va. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Before going pro, the Hall of Fame boxer enjoyed an extensive amateur career that included an astonishing 201-13 record with 91 knockouts, a silver medal as a lightweight at the 1982 World Championships, and gold medals at both the 1983 Pan American Games and 1984 Olympics—where he laid waste to Puerto Rican pugilist Luis Ortiz.

In 1989, Sweet Pea was named Ring Magazine’s Fighter of the Year, and after going toe-to-toe with the likes of Oscar De La Hoya, Julio Cesar Chavez, and Greg Haugen, announced his retirement in 2001 with a stellar professional record of 40-4-1. In 2006, his first year of eligibility, he was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame.

His youngest son, Devon Whitaker, remembers his father as a “cool guy” and believes the accident might’ve been a result of his attire. “I guess he was wearing dark clothes, the road was dark and the driver didn’t see him,” he told the Virginian-Pilot.

“I can’t really say how I’m feeling because I’m feeling shocked. I’m still trying to process everything that’s going on.”

In a statement on Facebook, World Boxing Council president Mauricio Sulaimán wrote: “‘Sweet Pea’ was one of the most brilliant boxers in the past decades and he was always a great friend of the WBC. We are deeply saddened with this new; [sic] May the legend rest in eternal peace.”

Algeria defeat Nigeria 2 - 1 to reach final of 2019 Africa Cup of Nations

Algeria beat Nigeria to enter AFCON Finals on Sunday.

Riyad Mahrez scored a sensational free-kick in the 95th minute as Algeria beat Nigeria 2-1 to seal their place in the Africa Cup of Nations final.

Algeria led thanks to William Troost-Ekong's own goal but Nigeria hit back through Odion Ighalo's penalty, awarded following a VAR check.

Extra time was looming until Algeria, who have not been to the final since winning the tournament on home soil in 1990, won a free-kick on the edge of the box.

And Mahrez, star man for the Desert Foxes, bent the ball around the wall to beat Nigeria goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi and seal his country a place against Senegal in Friday's final.

Novak Djokovic beats Roger Federer in longest Wimbledon final to claim fifth title

Novak Djokovic saved two match points to clinch a fifth Wimbledon title and 16th major on Sunday, shattering Roger Federer's bid to become the oldest Grand Slam champion in the longest final ever played at the tournament.

Despite being outplayed by the 37-year-old Swiss for large parts of the knife-edge encounter, the world number one triumphed 7-6 (7/5), 1-6, 7-6 (7/4), 4-6, 13-12 (7/3).

At 4 hours and 57 minutes, it was the longest Wimbledon final ever played and settled by a final set tiebreak for the first time.

Djokovic is the first man in 71 years to win the title from match points down. He is now level with Bjorn Borg as a five-time Wimbledon winner.

"I think that if this is not the most exciting final then definitely it's in the top two or three of my career against one of the greatest players of all time, Roger, who I respect," said Djokovic.

"Unfortunately in this type of match someone has to lose. It is quite unreal to be two match points down to come back and strange to play a tie-break at 12-12.

He has now won nine of his last 11 clashes against Federer and three of their four Wimbledon meetings.

Serena Williams vows to fight for equality until the 'grave'

Women's tennis star Serena Williams on Saturday vowed to continue her fight for equality after being asked about concerns over her dedication to the sport.

"The day I stop fighting for equality and for people that look like you and me will be the day I'm in my grave," Williams told reporters.

The comments from Williams came shortly after her loss to Romanian Simona Halep in the Wimbledon final, an outcome that marked her third consecutive defeat in a Grand Slam final.

Tennis great, Billie Jean King had expressed concerns amid the tournament that Williams's efforts off the court were making it difficult for her to keep up a high level of play.

"She's got a baby, she's trying to help gender equity, particularly women of color. But it makes it much harder," King, a 12-time Grand Slam champion, said, according to Reuters.

"I would like her to put everything else aside, because she's got people working on those things," she added.

"I wish she would just make a commitment for the next year and a half to two years and say, 'I'm going to absolutely focus on what's necessary for my tennis, so when I look in the mirror when I'm older, then I can go back in my mind and know I gave it everything I had.'"

King later clarified on Saturday that she would "never ask anyone to stop fighting for equality."

Serena Williams thanks 'great friend' Meghan Markle for Wimbledon support

Serena Williams is so thankful for Meghan Markle's support.

The tennis superstar might not have won the Wimbledon women's singles final against Romania's Simona Halep on Saturday, but she was glad her "great friend" was there to cheer her on.

In her post-match press conference, Williams told reporters that it was "great" seeing the Duchess of Sussex attend her game.

"She's such a great friend and a great person as well," Williams, 37, expressed. "And always positive, no matter what. It's so good to have people like that, just to know and she's such a fan of the sport."

Williams also added that Meghan was "happy for Simona."

"She saw that she played unbelievably, and that’s just the kind of person that she is," she said.

Meghan was in the stands with sister-in-law Kate Middleton, as well as Pippa Middleton. The ladies were all smiles as they watched the two women compete.
