Nigerian movies generated almost N7bn in cinemas in 2019 – NFVCB

The National Film and Video Censors Board (NVFCB) has revealed that Nigerian movies generated between N6.4billion and N6.7billion at all cinemas across spread the country in 2019.

The Executive Director of NVFCB, Adedayo Thomas, disclosed this yesterday, saying the money generated from DVDs sales could be much higher, noting that the statistics are not available.

He added that the number of Nigerians that watch movies at cinemas is still not up to 20 percent of the country’s population, noting that more Nigerians watch movies on DVDs.

“The box office generated almost N7bn in 2019. Between N6.4bn and N6.7bn was generated. But from information at our disposal, money generated from DVD sales may have been higher.

“This is because less than 20 percent of the population is watching cinema,” Thomas said.

The NVFCB is the federal government agency saddled with the responsibility of classifying and approving the release of movies.
