Kogi workers laments over non-payment of salaries

Civil servants, and pensioners, in Kogi State are groaning over unpaid salaries and pensions by the state and local governments, a situation which has put many of them in tight corner.

While majority of the state workers were paid up to January 2019 and currently being owed arrears of about four months – February to May – other categories of workers, especially those affected by the screening exercise embarked upon by the present administration, are being owed over 30 months.

At the local government levels, the situation of council workers and primary school teachers is said to be more worrisome as they have been receiving their pay in percentages over the years.

Some received as modest as 17% of the old minimum wage as their monthly salary, thus resulting in a situation whereby their take-home pay could not take them home, quite literally.

Kogi State Chairman of Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Comrade Thomas Ayodele lamented that teachers who were supposed to be on the first line charge in payment of salaries are relegated to the background.

A primary school teacher, Audu Austin, lamented that the irregular payments of salaries, coupled with the percentage payment over time has compounded his situation.

According to him, before the salary is paid, he had taken essentials on credit, such that when money comes, he hardly has anything left. Meeting his obligations to family, has also become difficult.

The situation of pensioners is not anything better as the senior citizens too have got bitter tales to tell. Abu Ibrahim, who retired from Lokoja local government in 2012, said life has not been easy since he has been unable to receive pension for the past 28 months.

Ibrahim told Daily Trust Saturday:

"We thank Almighty Allah who has been sustaining us, otherwise it has not been easy. I retired from service in 2012 and since the assumption of this administration, we started having some challenge of non-payment of pensions. We went for screening after screening, with cases of omissions here and there. For almost 28 months now, I haven’t taken pension. But thank God. After 35 years of serving your state, and you become a beggar? That’s quite sad.

"We have children in school; we have aged mothers and other dependants to cater for. But unfortunately, we are handicapped because we are not being paid. We are appealing to the present administration to consider us because tomorrow, they may find themselves where we are today.”

My dad once sang at my bedside for over an hour –Kiki Osinbajo

In an interview with Timileyin Akinkahunsi, Kiki Osinbajo, an entrepreneur and the daughter of the Vice President of Nigeria, Prof Yemi Osinbajo, talks about her life, motivation and what she thinks about the criticisms against the government.

For a young woman under 30 years old, you seem to be quite industrious; what motivates you?

My mother and my sister; I have two beautiful, hard-working and strong women in my corner that keep me going. They are my biggest cheerleaders and sometimes when I feel like I’m getting overwhelmed by work and need a break, I look at how hard they work and I know I have to do the same.

You manage about three beauty brands, what is your weekly schedule like?

One word, tough! Managing three different companies isn’t easy but I love what I do and I know this is just the beginning so I have to keep working.

Do you have plans to venture into another line of business soon?

Yes definitely! I’m currently in the retail line of business but I’m working on going into the farming aspect of beauty. Yes, farming, I know that might sound strange but all my products are actually plant based, so sourcing raw materials sometimes can be quite tedious. I’m looking into the agricultural market, which is out of my comfort zone, but I’m ready for the challenge!

What motivated you to become very industrious?

I think my background played that role! I was always taught that if you want something, you have to work hard to get it. I definitely want our country to be put on the map in the beauty industry and what better way to do that than working on it for myself?

You seem to be inspired by your mother’s love for gardens, is there a possibility that you’ll own a garden one day or invest in flowery business?

Well, I definitely love her passion for nature and I love how happy she is when she is in her garden or when she talks about plants. Maybe one day, I’d have a garden of my own but I would definitely need her help with it because I don’t know the basic things about plants.

How would you describe your childhood?

Loved, happy, and insightful! Thanks to my two amazing parents and my wonderful siblings.

Growing up, what were some of your childhood dreams?

I grew up thinking I would become a doctor but the moment I watched someone get an injection and couldn’t sleep for three nights, that dream became a nightmare.

It is evident that you have a very cordial relationship with your dad, what are some of the fun memories you had with him as a child?

My dad is the best! I mean I got his middle name ‘Oluleke’. I think the best memory was when I was about 18; we went to Abu Dhabi, UAE on holiday, I had a minor accident and was hospitalised for a couple of days. When I got back home, I was in pain and was crying. Everyone tried everything they could, but nothing worked. My dad came in, stood by the side of my bed, singing worship songs. He sang for about an hour and a half till I fell asleep. When I woke up, he was right there beside me even then I was in pain, but I didn’t want to wake him up because I knew if I moved too much, he would’ve woken up. I always knew he loved me but this made me realise how much.

Some people may feel you have everything on a platter of gold as the daughter of the Vice President; how would you react to this assertion?

My parents gave me the best life even before they got into office; yes, I was born with a silver spoon in my mouth but I believe that pushes me to work harder, not to prove anything to anyone, but because I know they gave me the best life and I would want to give my kids an even better life.

As the daughter of the Vice President of Nigeria; you are very active on social media, how do you react to some of the criticisms against the government?

I have watched my dad work hard, harder than ever! It is a democratic government; criticisms are bound to be there.

Sanusi sacks Jumat mosque Imam

The Emir of Kano, Malam Muhammad Sanusi II, on Friday in Kano, ordered the removal of the Chief Imam of Limawa Jumat mosque in Kumbotso Local Government Area of the state, Malam Salihu Muhammed. The removal is with immediate effect.

Muhammed was accused of allegedly acting contrary to the monarch’s instructions on moon sighting and the eventual Eid prayer at the end of Ramadan fasting by sighting the moon by himself and conducting his own Eid prayer a day after that of the Emir.

Sanusi lamented that the Imam did the same thing last year and was warned against it.

He, however, noted that since the Imam remained adamant and repeated the same action this year, he had no option than to replace him.

Hollywood actors, Keanu Reeves and Willem Dafoe and directors like Francis Ford Coppola, Alfonso Cuaron, Spike Lee, and Wim Wenders have come out in support of an independent Italian cinema group after it became the target of far-right violence.

"We express our solidarity to the youth attacked in Rome, as well as the experience of the Cinema America and all young people who create a dialogue between the world of art and people … It is unacceptable that there are still those who think they can impose their beliefs through the use of violence," the group, which also included John Malkovich, Guillermo del Toro and Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu, said in a statement.

On June 16, four young people wearing Cinema America t-shirts were attacked by suspected neo-fascists at an outdoor screening of the film First Reformed by Paul Schrader, who also signed on to support the cinema collective.

The suspects are reportedly already known to police for violent crimes and participation in extreme right-wing demonstrations.

They are all between 20 and 38 years old.
